The Buffoon Universe

Buffoon is a complex style which opens the door to an extraordinary dramatic dimension. The grotesque and misshapen appearance of the Buffoons gives them an endless range of expressive possibilities.

The style is visual, open and exaggerated. Mystic and tragedy is mixed with mockery and criticism of the human way of life. In a direct and provocative way the buffoons are mirroring society through “organized madness” on the edge of parody.

Buffoons are outcasts. They are refused by society and have nothing to loose, and therefore they turn sacred values into amusing parodies. They are superior mankind and take no sides except their own.

With their grotesque and morbid humour the Buffoons make the audience laugh at humanity’s appalling behaviour, only – with a twist of tragic-like seriousness – to turn and make the viewer choke on their own laughter. Their incredible group-solidarity and fellowship leaves the audience feeling lonely and vulnerable. In this respect, the Buffoon is like a mirror in which the audience sees itself and the acts of humanity in a different light.

After seeing a Buffoon show, most people leave with an experience that they will bring with them for a very long time.

Why Buffoon?

What does it mean to be alive today?

In our constantly expanding society, in which the differences between our cultures, class and living standards are on the increase, it is difficult not to feel small, and powerless. While the media feeds us endless information, making it hard for us to know what to believe or what is important, our own fear and insecurity expands our isolation from each other.

Our aim is to stir the human spirit, to incite imagination and awe, and to challenge our preconceptions through the compelling means of physical theatre. With this aim in mind, we have chosen to work with the Buffoon. This charming, yet at the same time shocking style, with its bizarre characters, charisma and humour, allows us to mirror the strengths and weakness of the human condition. This is achieved not through a judgemental method of performance, but with the goal is to make the audience form its own opinions. We wish to make people stop – even if only for a short moment – and reflect on how we humans behave and treat each other and the world we live in.
